Change Your Own Motor Oil And Save A Ton of Money

by admin on August 30, 2010

This is no time to be wasting money on quick lube oil changes.  Not only do you risk and engine disaster the US economy is about to have its back slammed into the wall of the worst recession in the history of the country.

With the plague of unemployment continuing to persist now is not the time to be wasteful.   It is time to be thrifty like our grandparents from the great depression and you can start with something as simple as changing your own oil.

For the past two decades the quick lubes have grown year over year.  How easy it has been for the average Joe to pull in get his oil changed and in 15 minutes be on the road again.  Well times are changing and the extra $15 dollars to have someone do it for you may not be the right answer.

$15 goes a long way at the grocery store when you have mouths to feed.

So right off the top you save at least $15 to change your own oil and depending on how many miles you drive a year that $60-$100 for the year.  Why not pay yourself!

An even better way to save money is to get the most bang for your buck by spending more for a premium oil.  Spending more money on oil you say!  I know, I know but wait…

To save money you have to compare oils to find out the best value per mile. For example if you change your own oil every 3,000 miles and you spend $10 on oil and a filter then your cost per mile is $.0033/mile.  If you spend $55 on oil and a filter and you change your oil once per year or at 25,000 miles then your cost per mile $.0022 per mile (about a third less).

This whole idea goes out the window if you blow your engine because you used a crappy oil for too long an oil change interval.  So I am not suggesting you just buy the store brand oil and filter and change your oil once a year.  There are some very reputable oils available that guarantee on the bottle their oil is good for 10,000, 15,000, and all the way up to 35,000 miles per oil change.

If you work this right you get excellent engine protection, you save money, and instead of changing your oil 4 to 6 times per year you only do it once.  Again, for this strategy to work, you have to have the oil and the filter that guarantee this practice.

With the economy on the brink of disaster there is no better time than right now to make a switch to changing your own oil with a higher quality oil that is guaranteed to protect your engine better at much longer change intervals.
